In with the purple, out with the blue
An overview of the applications for the 3rd cohort of Masters' Union.
Sleepless nights, long hours and thousands of profiles? Sounds like a typical day at the Masters’ Union admissions office.
With the commencement of our first round of admissions for our upcoming third cohort, we’re thrilled to report that we’ve seen some absolutely amazing, unique, out-of-the-box and creative applications from our audience.
We’re grateful for the expanded enthusiasm and want to reciprocate with letting you know some statistics behind the story.
The Breakdown
As previously mentioned, the Masters’ Union admissions philosophy is holistic. One that combines different elements - application, essays, exam scores, interview performances - to judge if a prospective student is a right fit for the institution.
Here’s a quick dissection of our applicant profile. We had many, many, many (did I say many?) applications across diverse geographic, educational and professional backgrounds.
Disclaimer - These statistics reflect a breakdown of the applicants for our first round. Once our cohort is formalized, we’ll be sharing their details with you, as well.
How long did it take to complete the application?
We witnessed that our candidates took an average time of 18 days to complete the Masters’ Union application. With the inclusion of new essay topics and an option to submit answers both in text & video formats, we witnessed some very creative and well articulated essay responses.
How old are the people applying?
Most of our applicants in this round were between the ages of 20 and 30, with the average age of an applicant being 24 years old.
What’s the gender ratio in the applicant pool?
As you can probably see, out of all the applications we received, a fourth were female and the rest, three fourth, male.
Where are our applicants from?
The biggest majority of our applicants are from the northern part of the country. After that, we see fairly equal distribution from both the southern and the western parts of the country.
What stream did our applicants take in high school?
Apart from several applications from prospective students who had done the IB (International Baccalaureate), we witnessed almost three fourth of our applicants coming from a high school science background.
Where did our applicants go for their undergrad?
With the ‘other’ tag applicable to students who’ve done their undergraduate degrees abroad, we witnessed a fairly equal distribution amongst colleges from the northern, southern and western regions of the country.
What did our applicants study in their undergrad?
As you can observe, we’ve received majority of applications from students who have an educational background in business/commerce and engineering, followed by smaller representation from arts and sciences. In this case, ‘others’ reflect disciplines like design, medicine, architecture, law and more.
What institutions are our applicants from?
We saw applications from premier undergraduate institutions from within and outside the country. This is by no means an exhaustive list and represents only a small subset of the different institutions we saw in our application.
How much work experience are our applicants bringing?
Across our applications, we witnessed that approximately half of them were applicants with experience between 1 and 3 years, followed by more experienced profiles having an experience between 3 and 5 years. The average work experience duration was 36 months or 3 years.
Where have our applicants worked previously?
We’re thrilled to see a fantastic mix between legacy institutions and startups, with roles and functions spread across the entire spectrum. From machine learning engineers, lawyers, film actors to entrepreneurs working on their own hydroponic farm - we’ve seen it all!
Final Thoughts
Taking a leaf from our picarian co-inhabitants, we see that even the language used to describe their behavior, originated within education. In biology, any fish that stay together for a social reason is termed as ‘shoaling’. When these fish swim together in a coordinated direction with the same speed, same direction and same intensity, it’s termed ‘schooling’.
Although we try not to compare our students to fish, I’d say it’s a pretty apt comparison. An experience that binds friendships, bends perceptions and breaks habits - the Masters’ Union experience is more of a rocket launch than steady slipstream in shallow water.
Shoals out. Schools in.
Its the first time I am seeing a college provide such deep and interesting analysis of students applications. It really feels like that token money on application is really being put to good use. Now, I believe that me chasing Master's Union will be worthfull.
I've never visible such targeted insight the college have shared ever. The long time evaluation for any university is calculated through the transparency they display.
Much happy with the mind to be part of Masters' Union and carry the legacy forward.
